Geography

Curriculum Lead: Mrs L. Archibald

Intent

At St Mary and St Michael Catholic Primary school we believe that geography helps to provoke and answer questions about the natural and human world, encouraging our children to be fascinated and curious about the world and their place in it. We strive for our children to be more inquisitive and have an excitement for learning and questioning.

Implementation

Here at St Mary and St Michael Catholic Primary School, teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human processes. Geography is an investigative subject which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. Our children will be able to connect new knowledge with existing knowledge, as well as develop fluency to apply their knowledge as skills. The fieldwork aspect of the subject allows the children to analyse data they have collected and present findings using a range of mathematical skills. Opportunities to write at length are included for each year group.

Impact

At the end of the year, we expect the children to achieve ARE (age related expectations) for their year group. Progress is monitored using formative assessment, 'POP’ (Proof Of Progress) tasks, the Lancashire Assessment Materials and teacher’s professional judgement. Intervention is provided where gaps in learning are identified.

Progression of Knowledge and Skills

We use the Lancashire National Curriculum Assessment Material documents for our progression of knowledge and skills. We adapt these where necessary to meet the needs of our pupils.
